Asbestos Related Diseases

Asbestos Fibers:

ASBESTOS: Asbestos is the general term given to a group of minerals that are fibrous and are resistant to high temperatures and various chemical insults. Mineralogically they are divided into two major groups, (1) the serpentines, and (2) the amphiboles.

(1) Serpentines: the only member of commercial importance is the chrysotile

a. Fibers are curved or curly

(2) Amphiboles: includes amosite, crocidolite, anthophyllite, tremolite, and actinolite

a. Fibers are straight

b. Fibers are responsible for the vast majority of pleuropulmonary disease

Exposure to Asbestos may increase the risk of these threatening diseases:

ASBESTOSIS
A pneumoconiosis characterized by more or less diffuse parenchymal interstitial fibrosis secondary to the inhalation of asbestos fibers

MESOTHELIOMA
The risk of developing mesothelioma appears to be independent of cigarette smoking.

MALIGNANT MESOTHELIOMA
In the vast majority of cases, malignant mesothelioma appears as a diffuse, plaquelike thickening that more or less encases the entire lung, at least in autopsy specimens

LUNG CANCER
Sseveral investigations have shown a dose-response relationship between the degree of asbestos exposure and the development of lung carcinoma.

CERTAIN OTHER CANCERS

(a) Colon cancer

(b) Throat cancer

(c) Pancreatic cancer

(d) Pharyngeal cancer

(e) Stomach cancer
