What Is Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a breathing condition caused by inhaling asbestos fibers. Asbestosis is a chronic medical condition affecting the tissue of the lungs. Exposure to asbestos in many occupations during the 20th century have resulted in thousands of cases of asbestosis in the United States.
Asbestosis is caused by inhaling high levels of tiny asbestos fibers. Over time, as these fibers pile up in the patient’s lungs, the lung tissue can become scarred. This scarring can lead to diminished breathing and if allowed to worsen, death.
Asbestosis Symptoms
The effects of long-term exposure typically don't show up for 20 to 30 years after initial exposure to asbestos. Symptoms develop when damage and scarring caused by the asbestos fibers lead to stiffness in the lung tissue so that the lungs can't contract and expand normally.
Some of the signs and symptoms of asbestosis include:
- Shortness of breath (during exertion or even when relaxed)
- Decreased endurance for any physical activity
- Cough
- Chest pains
